Appointment FAQ

I’ve never met with a registered dietitian before, what should I expect at the first appointment?

Whether you are trying to prevent sickness or manage a complex disease, nutrition counseling can help you optimize your health and improve your quality of life.  During the first appointment, the focus will be on analyzing your medical history as well as your nutrition and lifestyle habits.  To maximize our time together, please complete all required paperwork ahead of time and provide a copy of your most recent lab work. In addition to a full nutrition assessment, each initial visit includes an individualized education portion where, guided by your needs, we’ll review important concepts as well as address any topics of interest such as label reading or eating out.  Using information obtained in the assessment as well as feedback provided during the session, Aisling will design a personalized nutrition plan that will include a set of realistic, attainable goals, recommended meal and snack ideas, supplement recommendations (if needed), and any other resources required to help you reach your wellness goals.

What should I expect from a follow-up visit?

Follow-up appointments are a critical part of achieving success. During a follow-up visit, we’ll discuss your progress and address any questions or concerns that may have arisen since you began implementing nutrition and lifestyle changes.  The frequency of follow-ups will be individualized based on your needs and goals.  Follow-up appointments allow you and Aisling to tweak things as needed, while also ensuring that you feel supported and accountable in the process.

Are appointments covered by insurance?

Aisling is in-network with Aetna and Medicare. Medicare covers 100% of the appointment cost for clients with chronic kidney disease (not on dialysis), diabetes type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. On the first visit, you must bring a written referral from your doctor that includes a diagnosis code(s). Medicare covers 3 hours of consultation with a dietitian in the first year and 2 hours each year after.

At this time, Aisling is not in-network with any other insurance plans except Aetna and Medicare. However, if you have out of network benefits, you may be able to get your insurance to fully or partially reimburse you for the cost of the visit.  Contact your insurance company ahead of time to determine if they cover appointments with a registered dietitian.  Appointments must be paid for at time of consultation.  You will be provided with a receipt called a Superbill.  You can then submit this one page form to your insurance company for reimbursement.
